Add a little Avocado to your diet!

Happy Friday everyone! Today I wanted to talk about the natural goodness of avocados! When I did my internship out in Los Angeles, Ca I was astonished by the fact that almost every resultant (fast food included) had fresh avocados available. Once I added them to my deli sandwich I was hooked! Every since then I have added them to many dishes and snacks.

Ways I incorporate avocados:
  • My morning omelet- egg whites with chopped peppers, low-fat cheese, freshly slice avocado, topped with salsa!
  • My turkey sandwich- I either spread masked avocado on the bread or just add a layer of sliced avocado.
  • And of course with my fajitas and other Mexican cuisines! One of the most popular dips is Guacamole. Want to learn how to prepare it? Visit here! I will just add them as a side. Often times I will mix the beans and fat-free sour cream together with fresh mashed avocados and spread it inside my whole wheat tortilla! Delicious!
  • Did you know that you can add avocado to fresh kale to make the kale extra tender adding even more nutrition to your plate or your smoothie cup!
  • I have even used them as part of my beauty regimen! Avocado masks are refreshing to the skin! Some what of an avocado glow =)

Why do we love avocados? The healthy fats & many micro-nutrients of course! A few other Amazing Benefits of Avocados:

  • Cholesterol and sodium-free with less than 1 gram of sugar per 1 oz. serving. Hello heart health!
  • Virtually the only fruit with monounsaturated fat
  • Avocados act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein, from foods that are eaten with the fruit. Great with seasonal squash or sweet potato for the added nutrient absorption of Vitamin A.
  • Nutrient-dense, can contribute to the nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients to one’s diet.

**Fresh avocados guarantees the most nutrition!**
The one tip I always stress when I'm lecturing or counseling is focus on finding nutrient-rich foods to add to your plate. Avocados are a perfect nutrient dense food to add to your diet.

  1. I love avocados and it's one of the food that I eat even when I went on a 3 Day Military diet. It's packed with nutrients and potassium plus the good fats! I've put some on my open faced sandwich to fill me up. I guess the key to losing weight is to exercise and practise portion control, calorie counting and drink more water. It also helps to have a fitness buddy in your road to fitness. For more of this amazing diet, here's the resource page I've found: http://3daysmilitarydiet.com/blog/exercises-military-diet.html
