National Garden Month-Let's grow some nutrition!

Flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and the sunshine is shining, hallelujah spring is here, and what a perfect way to welcome it by celebrating National Garden Month. Every April represents National Garden Month and communities all across the nation come up with creative ways to celebrate. In Lynchburg, Virginia they hold an annual Festival of Gardening and in Canby, Oregon they will be hosting a Spring Garden Fair. To see what is going on in your neck of the woods visit National Garden Month.
Perhaps you have never thought about expanding your garden to include nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Gardening changes your attitude towards quality nutrition because you know how hard you worked to grow your fruits and vegetables. If you are not able to grow a nutrient-rich food garden I encourage you to seek out your local Farmer's Market. As a society, I do not think we support our farmers enough. Farmer's Markets is more of an experience then a shopping trip. Most markets will have music, activites for children, food trucks or stands to eat lunch, and opportunities to sample new foods. Anytime I have the opportunity to support local I do because my green thumb has yet to grow in.
I am a novice when it comes to growing anything. I have been accused of killing plants that are almost impossible to kill. A few years ago a family member gave me a leaf of a plant and she said “Cindy, there is NO way you can kill this plant!” I put the little leaf in a jar with water and checked on it every day!  I have to admit I did well…for awhile. On a beautiful spring day I set the mason jar outside for some sunshine and when I returned the jar was there, but the leaf had blown away! Just my luck, somehow Mother Nature knew I wasn’t cut out for gardening.
When Brian and I finally settle in our home I want to grow a big food garden. Some of my best childhood memories with my mom were picking strawberries off the vine in our back yard. Hopefully, Mother Nature and I will see eye-to-eye by then.  To help establish my green thumb I thought I would start small again and try growing fresh herbs. As I was shopping for my Cara Box and Foodie Pen Pal gifts I came across this garden in a bag at Barns and Nobles. No prep just open and water and give sunlight as needed. Surely, I can handle this. Time will tell and I will keep you posted. How will you celebrate National Garden Month? Please, help me spread the word by re-blogging about this post or sharing via other social media outlets!

I hope this will inspire you to grow some nutrition!
Happy gardening
